The choice of wood species for your flooring is totally a matter of style, budget and personal preference. Currently in the market we have many different species, each one making possible a new possibilities for decoration.
In the case of light woods, do you prefer fraxinus or acer? These species usually make the room seem bigger than it actually is and improves the air circulation.
In the case of traditional tones woods, do you prefer American walnut or oak? Usually these species makes the room seem a little bit more cozy and warm.
Do you prefer dark woods like walnut or mahogany? These species tend to make the room seem more refined and imponent.
Imported species might even offer more color options.
After deciding about the looks, you must start to plan on how the floors are going to be used. Do you live all by yourself or do you have a big family with children and pets? Each wood species is classified according to its hardness and durability, through the Janka scale.
The Janka scale indicates the probability of a wood species being crushed or suffering other types of damages. For example, the black cherry is classified as 950 in the Janka scale while the Brazilian cherry is as 2820, almost three times black cherry’s hardness. The black cherry would be a perfect match for those who live alone, since their floor will have less traffic, while the Brazilian cherry is recommended for the big family with children and pets.
